We’re looking for 14 talented and passionate actors to bring the powerful story of False Accounts to life. This is a paid opportunity to perform in a dynamic and impactful play with multiple performances at renowned venues.

 

Featured Roles Available to Apply For:

ACTOR 1 – Narrator / Young Villager

Age Range: Flexible (must feel youthful)
Brief Description & Personality Traits:

• A child of one of the postmasters, opening and closing the play with emotionally powerful speeches.

• Expressive and engaging, must be able to hold the audience’s attention.

• A key emotional anchor, showing the impact of the scandal on families.
  Accent (if applicable): Flexible; ideally matches the actor’s background.
  Key Role in the Story: Provides an emotional connection for the audience.
  Ethnicity, Gender: Any ethnicity, any gender.
  Compensation: Paid.

ACTOR 2 – Boeing Manager / Fujitsu Boss / Fed 3 / Helpline 3 / Belinda Crowe

Age Range: Flexible
Brief Description & Personality Traits:

• Arrogant, entitled, and ruthless. Embodies corporate corruption and failure.

• Belinda Crowe may be played by a man in a wig with a high-pitched voice (as in previous productions).

• Must have a strong presence and excellent comedic timing.
  Accent (if applicable): RP or Corporate Neutral.
  Key Role in the Story: Represents the elite corporate villains.
  Ethnicity, Gender: White, any gender.
  Compensation: Paid.

ACTOR 3 – Auditor 1 / Chris Aujard

Age Range: Flexible
Brief Description & Personality Traits:

• Slimy, patronising, and deceptive. Aujard is educated but morally corrupt.

• Must be distinct from Auditor 2 in voice and mannerisms.
  Accent (if applicable): RP or upper-middle-class English (ability to also do Cockney is a plus).
  Key Role in the Story: Represents legal and financial fraud. Also doubles as an in-character usher.
  Ethnicity, Gender: White, any gender.
  Compensation: Paid.

ACTOR 4 – Auditor 2 / John Scott / Gareth Jenkins / Max Penalty / Judge

Age Range: Flexible
Brief Description & Personality Traits:

• Gareth Jenkins should now be played as a soft-spoken, nervous, nerdy type.

• Other roles require a different energy—John Scott is a cockney conman, over-the-top and shady.

• Judge is a voice role in Act 2, adding gravitas.
  Accent (if applicable): Cockney or working-class for Scott; softer, hesitant voice for Jenkins.
  Key Role in the Story: Another side of corporate fraud; contrasts with Auditor 1.
  Ethnicity, Gender: White, any gender.
  Compensation: Paid.

ACTOR 5 – Postmaster 1

Age Range: 40+
Brief Description & Personality Traits:

• Inspired by Seema Misra & Seema Patel—wrongly accused, devastated but resilient.

• A key emotional role, requiring depth and strength.
  Accent (if applicable): South Asian or regional British.
  Key Role in the Story: Represents the innocent victims fighting for justice.
  Ethnicity, Gender: Female, Asian/Indian (or mixed-race if needed).
  Compensation: Paid.

ACTOR 6 – Villager 1 / Reviewer 1 / Paula Vennells

Age Range: Flexible
Brief Description & Personality Traits:

• Former Post Office CEO; cold, self-absorbed, ruthless.

• Must be played with a satirical edge, highlighting corporate arrogance.
  Accent (if applicable): RP or posh London.
  Key Role in the Story: A major corporate villain.

ACTOR 7 – Villager 2 / Reviewer 2 / Fed 1 / Helpline 2 / Alice Perkins

Age Range: Flexible (could be played by a younger actor despite Perkins’ real-life age)

• Bureaucratic, privileged, detached from reality.

• Represents the elite mindset that dismissed the victims.
  Accent (if applicable): RP or upper-class.
  Key Role in the Story: Symbolises corporate failure and cover-ups.

ACTOR 8 – Villager 4 / Reviewer 3 / Fed 2 / Helpline 1 / Angela Van De Bogerd (Puppet)

Age Range: Flexible

• Manipulative and complicit, a major figure in the scandal.

• Angela Van De Bogerd is played using a puppet (must budget for puppet training).

• The puppet’s voice should be as annoying as possible.

ACTOR 9 – Postmaster 2

Age Range: 50+

• Wrongly accused, carrying immense emotional weight.

• Based on numerous older white female Subpostmasters.
  Accent (if applicable): Regional British (e.g., Yorkshire, Midlands).
  Key Role in the Story: Represents resilience and injustice.

ACTOR 10 – Postmaster 3 / Ian Henderson

Age Range: 40+
Brief Description & Personality Traits:

• A kind, well-spoken and educated man, juxtaposing the corporate villains.

• Inspired by the postmaster who tragically took his own life.

• Should be a believable father to the Narrator.
  Accent (if applicable): North East English.
  Key Role in the Story: Represents those who fought back.
  Ethnicity, Gender: Any ethnicity, male.

ACTOR 11 – Postmaster 4 / “4B”

Age Range: 40+
Brief Description & Personality Traits:

• Inspired by Teju Adedayo, an outsider who connects with the group only at the High Court.

• Plays two distinct postmasters, so accents must be clearly different.
  Accent (if applicable):

• Postmaster 4: African/Black British.

• 4B: Must be significantly different (e.g., Scouse).
  Key Role in the Story: Represents diversity in the scandal’s victims.

ACTOR 12 – Postmaster 5

Age Range: 40+

• Leader of the JFSA, based on Alan Bates.

• Pragmatic, stubborn, becomes the spokesperson for the movement.

  Key Role in the Story: The leader of the campaign for justice.

ACTOR 13 – Villager (Gina) / Horizon Trainer / Mr Piggerton / Fed 4 / Alwen Lyons / Fujitsu Muppet 2 / Mrs Bates (Voice Role)

Age Range: Flexible

• A highly versatile character actor, switching between multiple personas.

• Mrs Bates is a voice role from the wings.

ACTOR 14 – Villager 3 / Fujitsu IT / Fed 5 / Susan Critchton / Fujitsu Muppet 1

• Susan Critchton must have a messy curly grey wig.
